Donald S Bae, MD

Orthopedic Surgeon

Boston Children’s Hospital

Dr Bae is an orthopaedic surgeon at Boston Childrens Hospital who specializes in hand and upper extremity conditions in children and young adults. As a leader in the ROCKET group he focuses on Osteochondritis Dissecans and other complex elbow disorders, working to improve diagnosis, treatment, and long term outcomes for growing athletes and active patients. He directs the Hand and Orthopaedic Upper Extremity Program and serves as co director of the Harvard Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship.

His clinical practice spans the full range of congenital, traumatic, neuromuscular, and sports related conditions of the upper limb. He cares for infants with congenital hand differences, children with brachial plexus birth injury and neuromuscular disorders, and adolescents and collegiate athletes with fractures, shoulder instability, elbow OCD, and overuse injuries. Families value his clear communication, thoughtful decision making, and commitment to restoring motion, strength, and function so that children can participate fully in school, sport, music, and daily life.

Dr Bae is internationally recognized for his work in pediatric hand and upper extremity surgery. He co authored the textbook Pediatric Hand and Upper Limb Surgery: A Practical Guide and has published extensively on elbow OCD, clavicle and forearm fractures, congenital upper limb differences, brachial plexus birth palsy, and pediatric sports injuries. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and an active member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, where he has served on the Board of Directors and as program chair for major international meetings. His work in education and simulation has also helped define best practices for training future surgeons.

Dr Bae completed his undergraduate studies at Harvard College and earned his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He trained in general surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and in orthopaedic surgery through the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program. He then completed fellowship training in pediatric orthopaedics at Boston Childrens Hospital and in hand and upper extremity surgery at Brigham and Womens Hospital. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with added qualification in surgery of the hand.

A former Division One swimmer and captain of the Harvard Mens Varsity Team, Dr Bae brings the perspective of an athlete who recovered from shoulder surgery to return to high level sport. This experience shapes his philosophy of care, which is grounded in compassion, rigorous science, and a deep sense of responsibility to each child and family he serves.
